Stability
and security
One of the most stable democracies in the Latinamerica is Panama.
Since Noriega's deposition in 1989 the Panama’s presidents
have been democratically elected. The president Martin Torrijos
began his five year term in September 2004. His government is taking
effective actions to reduce corruption and is very friendly for
the foreign investors.
Panama is considered one of the safest estates in the entire world.
In the Newsweek magazine, in which countries all over the world
were rated for tourist safety, Panama obtain the same category as
the United States. The foreigners residents in Panama know how safe
is Panama compared with another countries.
As
for all foreign travelers, when going about it is recommendable
not carry large sums of cash, carry a copy of your passport, and
don't use expensive jewels, collars, etc. And like anywhere, there
are poor areas of town that it is not wise to walk around in especially
at night.
In
Panama one sector of the country has a State Department warning-
this is a remote part of Darien province that borders with Colombia
because is dangerously for the Guerrillas. Only periodists and
religious go there with many risk.
Clothes
In general, for the tropical climate, light colored, loose fitting
cotton clothes are the most comfortable. Do bring neat clothes.
Panamanians don’t appreciate grunge. Panamanians themselves,
especially the women of Panama City are beautifully groomed. Panama
City is a dress-up city , but as a tourist you’ll be excused
from the dress code provided you are dressed neatly. The highlands
can be cold in the night so a warm sweater or light jacket is
necessary. If you plan to hike, bring long pants, boots , a hat
and insect repellant. For everyone else a good sunscreen, sunglasses
and binoculars.
Money and Prices in Panama
The US dollar is the great tourist conveniences in the country.
In Panama you don't have to be a genius to figure out what that
meal just cost. Everything is cheap and inexpensive. Including
the food, the hotels rooms, the accesories, clothes, electrodomestics,
etc...
The tourism industry in Panama is just developing and so prices
are reasonable and some of the most competive anywhere. With a
few exceptions, Panama is not the place for “bargain basement”
beach vacation offerings like Cancun. Panama is the "affordable
exotic destination", meaning it offers exotic, unique kind
of experiences with no tourist hordes and with priceless pristine
nature.
